Iris Barrel was born on August 29, 1921, in Queens, New York. She was the only child of Samuel and Sadye Barrel. Apfel studied art history at New York University and attended the University of Wisconsin's art school. In 1950, she married Carl Apfel. Together, they started Old World Weavers. This textile company played a significant role in interior design projects, including work for the White House under nine presidents.
