Bora Aksu's Spring/Summer 2026 collection is a tender reclamation of beauty in imperfection. Inspired by his lifelong fascination with broken Victorian dolls, the designer crafts a world where the cracks are not concealed but celebrated—a poetic blend of nostalgia, fragility, and defiant elegance.

Aksu opens SS26 with a singular muse: the damaged dolls in his studio shelves. These childhood relics, once discarded due to their flaws, become a source of empathy and artistry. He states, "We are all broken... for some, there is strength in the cracks." That ethos is no mere metaphor: the garments reflect a care toward "source material" (deadstock lace, antique trims) and toward the emotional weight of being imperfect and visible.

The silhouettes merge soft and structured in quiet tension. Aksu revisits the "pretty-baby" dress form, scaled up: nightgowns rendered in iridescent lace, tiered prairie dresses, puff sleeves, peplum blouses. Meanwhile, tailoring appears in checked separates, short suits that echo clashing prints and asymmetry.

Fabric choice is central, featuring broderie anglaise, cottons, lace, crochet overlays, tulle, and sheer organzas, many of which reference antique or reclaimed sources. Deadstock lace from a shuttered Turkish bridal house is used for overlays and trimmings; antique-chintz prints reappear, infused with faded nostalgia. The work is painstaking: raw seams, oversized sequins that hang loosely, and appliqués that seem to bloom out of the threads. Feminine detail is paired with asymmetry, transparency, and visible seams to underscore the theme of beauty in imperfection.

A soft, wistful palette dominates, featuring pastels like powder pink, peach, and soft blues, as well as washed coral; anchored by ghostly whites, inky blacks, and touches of deeper tones.

Prints are antique in spirit, featuring gingham checks softened into sheer overlays, floral embroideries, lace motifs, and textures that recall heirlooms. The result is not overt sweetness, but a nuanced unease — dolls revived, yet still bearing scars.

The show-space setup reinforces emotionality: a rose garden frames walkways; models wear bonnet caps, lace caps, and headpieces that echo childhood with a Gothic tilt. The mood is nostalgic, fragile, but not passive: there is strength in wear, in texture, in what remains standing. Aksu doesn't idealize the past so much as tend to its ruins — and in those remnants there's power.

Aksu's concept is emotionally rich and personal; the broken-doll muse gives the collection heart and purposeful unevenness. Craft is deeply present: choice of vintage and deadstock materials, lace overlay, appliqués, soft tailoring — all show both skill and softness. The balance between fantasy and wearability is carefully maintained. While many pieces are theatrical, others feel transportable, such as the cotton tiered dresses, the lace overlay blouses, and the lighter separates.

The scale of ornamentation and fragility can verge on overwrought; for some viewers, the cracks might feel literal and heavy rather than poetic. Cohesion under high romanticism is difficult: some looks may blur into one another; the density of lace, tiering, and ruffles demands strong visual pacing. Commercial translation: For wearers outside the editorial sphere, delicate fabrics, overlays, and intricate details may pose durability challenges or require more conservation than daily wear.

Bora Aksu's SS26 feels timely. In an era increasingly attuned to mental health, authenticity, and completeness in imperfection, this collection resonates. It shifts away from polished perfection toward emotional texture. The use of reclaimed materials and deadstock lace also aligns with the sustainable and slow fashion movements, adding a deeper resonance.

Spring/Summer 2026 sees Bora Aksu embracing vulnerability as strength. Through lace, sequins, and cracked form, he reminds us that beauty is not flawless— it is lived. His SS26 collection is an elegy and an affirmation; a whispered poem about the things we break, the things we renew, and how through cracks we

may let in light.
